Exquisite world building, great character development and some really top tier magic wielding and monster fighting. This book was

Update: I said I wouldn’t move on to the next book straight away but I lied.

I really cannot handle books with betrayals. I should discuss this with my therapist ha ha. Betrayals hurt my heart. This really hurt. Really really hurt.

The whole time I was thinking "this is 3 star worthy" until the end when it bumped to 4 angry feminine rage stars.

I found this at the library and thought it was newish but it came out a couple of years ago. However, there's a lot of hype going around about this book right now so it jumped to the top of my TBR.

Mysterious girl and Viking mercenaries? Count me in. FMC has a background she can't quite remember. To me this reminded me of the Anastasia trope.

My biggest pet peeve were the men. I almost DNF'd it a few times because I am very short tempered with asshole men these days. I CANNOT STAND IT.

The author is very good though and we begin to like both of them and FMC starts a relationship with one but there are many many red flags that start showing with this particular man (more specifically his internal dialogue and his tragic backstory).

She wrote a controlling, possessive man REALLY well. I got the ick. BUT I want him to have a redemption arc in book 3 (because I know he leans into his villain era in book 2).

Honestly after the reveal and betrayal, I don't know if my heart can take the next book but it's on hold at the library. I guess I'll read a few happy palate cleanser books in the meantime.

Lastly, I don't know if I got lost in the worldbuilding at the beginning but I can't remember why magic is so bad in the kingdom.

This book was slow, but I don’t mean that negatively. The world building was delicious. I love the side characters and honestly wanted more of them. The nicknames made it hard for me to keep up with who was whom, but I feel like I finally caught on. I am about to jump right into book 2.

THIS BOOK IS SO DAMN GOOD FOURTH WING WHO!!!!!!! Ohmygod haven’t read a book that made me feel like this in so long…the romantasy was romantasying. world building, writing, storytelling, character development, romance, found family were all so good. I love a morally grey romantic interest LOL. The magic stuff in this was so cool….cant believe I have to wait to get the second book off hold
