4.25⭐ rounded down to 4. This series was a wonderful surprise! I dove in with no expectations, and I truly enjoyed listening to the audiobook. If you like Iceland and Norse mythology, multiple love interests, possessive MMCs, sexy Vikings, tension and intrigue, multiple POVs, and breadcrumb-style worldbuilding, you’ll probably enjoy this one.

Some of my favourite tropes are in there, and there are sexy Vikings… what more could a girl want? I found the plot compelling, didn’t find any issue with the writing, and enjoyed the atmosphere. Most of the issues I had with this book were about the characters. I wasn’t crazy about the protagonists, but the side characters made up for it. I thought it was very realistic that the FMC wasn’t a skilled fighter (at all) even after a bit of training, but she was sooo inconsistent it got on my nerves. Sometimes she was so naïve and dim I’d roll my eyes all the way to Peru, other times she was snarky and reckless and smart. Anyways, most of the drama is due to her bad decisions, and that *always* annoys me. Also, the villain character Skreida was so interesting… but her storyline was very anticlimactic, which made her POV chapters seem pointless. Other than that, I liked that the romance was only a subplot, and that the relationship was mostly physical. It was a nice break from the overused instalove and fated-mates tropes. Finally, one plot twist near the end had me screaming in my car! Can’t wait to know what comes next.

Tropes to expect: serial killer, love triangle, double grumpy vs. sunshine, the Usurper, the rightful heir returns, obliviously superpowered, ragtag bunch of misfits.

❤️ Worldbuilding and lore
❤️ Side characters
❤️ Dark, creepy atmosphere
❤️ Multiple love interests with the slowwwest slow burn #iykyk
❤️ Drunk Silla and Rey
❤️ Action sequences
❌ Inconsistent and weak FMC
❌ Alphahole/patronizing MMCs
❌ Awkward male voices
❌ Anticlimactic/underused POV from Skraeda

Trigger warnings: violence, blood and gore, addiction, death and grief, murder, injury and injury detail, toxic relationship, kidnapping and confinement, abuse (physical, emotional, domestic, child, sexual), sexual assault and violence, torture, fire and fire injury, body horror, war, abandonment, rape, misogyny, animal death, etc.

Not removing any stars for this, but there are a few silly things that triggered me:
1. What’s up with the title inconsistency? The Road of Bones, Kingdom of Claw, Dawn of the North… like, what? My OC brain is not happiy.
2. Why do most of the women’s names begin with S? Gahh.
3. I had to listen to it at 1.7x speed, because the voice actor speaks soooo slowly.
4. The voice actor’s pitch changes constantly, so I had to play with the volume all. the. time. to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Annoying.

(Now that I think of it… perhaps I should recommend you READ it instead of listening to the audio version.)

(I thought this was a trilogy. I just read that it’s actually a 5-book and 7-novella series. Not sure if I like it enough for *that* kind of commitment. TBC.)

This audiobook is fire. I previously read this book and listening to it just added to the experience. My original review rings true:

Mysterious woman seeks transport to far off town.

The Road of Bones was the pick for a book club and I jumped in without any background. This book has all the elements I love, mystery, adventure, a love interest, death, destruction, magical creatures causing havoc, a stowaway, “one horse”, comradely affection, sisterly connections, haunting dreams, and did I mention the vampire deer?! I enjoyed this so much, I finished it and immediately started the sequel.

Demi Winters has a way of making the world very approachable, even when you aren’t exactly sure what a word means. She does give you tools to help, such as a glossary and map. I’m not sure what magic she practices, but this book has some of the best pacing I’ve found in a while, the story just kept flowing. The characters are so well thought out, you pick up on their personalities at first introduction. Overall, l blasted through this book like it was 200 pages.

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

The writing is choppy, the dialogue is stilted, and the FMC is not compelling.
