Banana Yoshimoto writing about dealing with loss and grief should be a genre of its own and I absolutely love it
4.5
I was like 5 pages into the book when I had to take a break, everything was happening way to fast and I was getting overwhelmed, the emotional changes were abrupt and I just needed to breathe. It was confusing but it was nowhere bad, what I needed was a way to describe this feeling,A thought came to my mind, it felt like playing duddle jump, a mobile game where a green thingy jumps from a platform to another, but there are levels where some platforms have cracks and once you step on it, it breaks and you need to move to another one as fast as you can or you’ll fall.
That’s just how Banana Yoshimoto writing style felt like, a fast paced work that induces mini heart attacks while the situation you were into transforms into something else without you even noticing but it just makes sense. And it’s a funny coincidence but that’s exactly what this book is about, the changes one experiences in the face of loss and grief.
You can’t go back, nothing is the same, everything keeps going and it hurts so much but there’s little you can do about it, but at the end of the day one must face that things, good or terrible will happen and we must face them sometimes with gritted teeth and other times with a head high.
This one destroyed me but filled me with hope and leaved me with puffy eyes from crying, Moonlight Shadow made the hopeless romantic in me scream because wow, it was heart ripping and Kitchen is life changing.

I could see the dreamy, surreal quality of this book, but the choppy translation just took me out of it so much. It took forever to finish.
Overall I love Japanese stories about grief, longing, sadness, and love it always hits a comfort spot for me and this book was no different.

This novel made me quite emotional, despite it’s simplicity it’s so sweet and wonderfully written.

I first read this book back in the 90s. I was a different person then. And something about the novel's warm hearted melancholy spoke to me back then. Eriko is such a wonderful character. One who stays with you, in a good way.
Due to a book club i recently had the pleasure of revisiting the book. For me, it still works superbly today.

This book held 2 tender stories of loss and connection they were ok! Idk if I was in the mood to handle these themes this summer it might have been more touching in the fall
