This started out slowly but got better as I went along. Several plot lines, including the mystery Sam was hired to solve, gave it a nice pacing that kept my interest. There was a touch of romance, and hints of more to come in later books.
It seems like all books about vampires make their lore a bit different from all others, but this one is really different. Several of the traits that are scoffed at by most vampires (turning into a bat, no reflection in a mirror, possible reaction to holy water) are true in Sam's world.
I haven't decided if I will continue the series or not. Is it worth a credit per 5+ hour volume? I will definitely do it if Audible puts it in the Escape package...
Cover: Interesting. Okay.
Narrator: She did an adequate job.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: I think you could make a case for sorting her into any house, which I guess means that her personality is multi-layered. I'm going to put her into Ravenclaw because she is constantly curious.
Themes: Fullerton CA (LA), vampires, werewolves, PI, family

I enjoy good paranormal fiction. Unfortunately there is a lot of bad paranormal fiction. This one falls into the "good" category. Samantha Moon is a former federal agent who is now a private investigator. She was forced to retire after being attacked by a vampire 6 years ago and turned. To complicate matters, she is a dedicated mother and her marriage is in serious trouble. Samantha is hired by prominent defense attorney, Kingsley Fulcrum to find the person who tried to kill him by shooting him 5 times in the face. The story/mystery is not very complicated, but the characters are fun. This is the first in a series and I look forward to the next one. As brain candy, this is chocolate.

I loved this fantasy book. It has vampires and a werewolf. All in sunny southern California. It's such a unique take on a vampire who has no one to show her the ways and learns on her own. She's a PI now because she had to retire from the FBI after she was attacked and changed. She's looking into who tried to kill a defense attorney who happens to be a werewolf. It's a quick fun read and the first in a series.
I am starting to see a theme in my books! I admit it, I like vampire books. A friend recommended J.R. Rain to me and I did enjoy this book. I enjoy reading stories that make me forget I'm reading. That's what this one did. I can't wait to be able to get the next in the series.
Slow start. Good plot and interesting characters. The four star is that there were some parts where Samantha rambles on about why she is a vampire that took me out of the story. Will be going on to the second one.
Not bad but not great. Good enough that I will read the next book in the series.
This story was funny, and sad, and just a bit extra. I like how it has a paranormal twist, but without knowing everything and actually some of the twists were not as mainstream as the other paranormals. I started the second book right away, and was laughing then sniffling back tears almost immediately, very easy and good read.
An incredibly strong start to a book with great writing! But, it left me wanting more. I feel like the author could have taken the book a few steps further and ended it on a much stronger night.
Great idea and okay execution.
