This is the first book in a long time that managed to make me feel the way I felt reading fantasy as a child. It has this feel of absoulte immersion into another world to it, while still satisfying the storytelling quality I look for now as an adult.

The worldbuilding is insane - at first it seems very straightforward, but throughout the story the author effortlessly weaves in more and more details that make you realise how deep it actually goes, and how every part of it is inextricably intertwined with the characters and the story at large.

All the characters are three-dimensional, morally grey and very human, and it is so interesting to follow their thoughts and actions. Every action always has far-reaching consequences, nothing exists in a vacuum. Bonus points are the fight scenes, which are remarkably realistic both regarding what happens, and how the characters feel during.

I have read several reviews that it is not well written, which may be because the language is not very flowery. However, it is very evocative and emotional. I found the writing to be very elegant and pretty. (I read it in the German translation though, so maybe I just had an extremely talented translator.)

The world-building and magic systems were soooo amazing. Fonda Lee is able to introduce all these aspects while keeping the story interesting. Her characters were imperfect and fit well in this mafia-inspired world

So I’m finally getting around to this series and WOW. Yea I definitely get the hype over this book. Not gonna lie, the first like 25-30% was a bit slow but there was definitely a lot of interesting clan politics/world building to keep me interested.
I will say that the only 2 reasons this book isn’t a 5 star read for me were 1. I felt like the characters weren’t well-developed enough for me to really care until almost the end of the book (except
✨Hilo✨
, but I do understand that there’s gonna be a lot of character development across books 2 and 3; and 2. It felt a bit like a set up book for the next 2 books
Overall REALLY good though and I would def recommend to anyone who likes gritty crime shows like Warrior, Peaky Blinders, Sons of Anarchy, etc. Will absolutely be reading Jade War & Legacy!

This is an entertaining read about a gang war in a fantasy setting with fairly limited magic. The plot starts a little slow, but builds to some tense, emotional moments by the end. The real strength of this book is in the characters, who are loveable even when they are awful people. I was heavily invested by the back half of the book.
