A random Batman graphic novel from our shelves. It kind of feels like it is showing a bit of age. Not sure what we were thinking when we bought it. Though Talia and Ra's al Ghul is a plus. Basically a James Bond plot, with a weather satellite and everything. Batman and the hostages rings true. Batman and the Demon maybe a little less. Okay art. Decent enough writing. But nothing fantastic.

Well the good ol' silver age of comics , filled with needless panels of over the top violence , sexually suggestive female characters (& this one had a suggestive intercourse panel as well) and of course the way over the top plot with cold war era subterfuge also on display .

This was a 90 pages long book and the first 30 or so pages were simply excellent , the book was good when it displayed Batman fighting goons and doing detective work , but it soon dives into a plot line that saw Batman readily accepting to be part of the league of shadows and just jumping (hehe) on the opportunity to marry Talia

This followed pages upon pages of Batman acting like an self entitled jerk finishing with an very unimaginative final act with a hand on hand fist fight and Batman non regrettably killing someone . Woo hoo

Basically the first third of the book was good , 2nd third was boring and the final act was very uncharacteristic of Batman , even for the time of the book's release . The art was typical of silver age comics and nothing to really write home about . Overall , i didnt enjoy this

aside from the A plot just being super boring this book just kinda sucked. i suppose it was meant to be bruce trying to have a family again but with the al ghuls but bruces treatment of talia during her pregnancy and his disregard for talias wellbeing and only caring for the baby was just gross and then talia faked a miscarriage for why? because bruce was too overprotective or something? ALSO A NON-CON MARRIAGE?? how does this even make sense. idk the vibes are off

This was pretty good, overall. Batman's relationship with Ra's al Ghul is revisited and placed in a somewhat different light, and Batman's longstanding relationship with Talia is rekindled.
I agree that the conceit of Batman working alongside thugs with machine guns doesn't fully work, but he does inject his moral code into their ranks and disciple at least.
This story inspired the Batman & Son storyline by Grant Morrison nearly 15 years later, and I've always been intrigued by Batman's tumultuous relationship with Ra's al Ghul and Talia--they're somewhat family to him, and this is a solid extension of that.

After finding [b:Batman: Birth of the Demon|704586|Batman Birth of the Demon|Dennis O'Neil|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1225255495l/704586._SX50_.jpg|690872] and [b:Batman: Bride of the Demon|2353134|Batman Bride of the Demon|Mike W. I think both this and [b:Batman: Birth of the Demon|704586|Batman Birth of the Demon|Dennis O'Neil|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1225255495l/704586._SX50_.jpg|690872] are the strongest of the three.

This being the first introduction of Batman's son by Talia, I was always intrigued by roots of what Grant Morrison would eventually use for [b:Batman and Son|440960|Batman and Son|Grant Morrison|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328217465l/440960._SY75_.jpg|2189612]. It was was enjoyable, but not necessarily something I plan on rereading soon. I luckily found the hardcover at one of my favorite comic shops for cover price, but not necessarily worth the $30 price tag I was seeing on eBay. Honestly, I would suggest getting [b:Batman: Birth of the Demon|12104789|Batman Birth of the Demon|Mike W. Art: okay, i like the bright colours, the pages are easy to read and the many big spreads have something.
Story: i think i would be much more interested in seeing this from Talias perspective, but to be fair i was reading this as part of a Talia Al Ghul reading list so i approched it with a bias. Batman comes of as really unlikeable here, which i am not sure was intended - related the hetro and nuclear family bias feels weird, like there is a interesting story about family here, between talia and her father, batman and talia and qayin and Ra - but it doesnt really move in any breaking norm ways.
the villian plot kind of lost my attention to be honest

EDIT: After further research I now understand how the last page works in the Batman canon, but still, damn. Although, now that I know how it fits in, it makes it that much more awesome!

Is it perfect, no. Am I giving it 5 starts because of that last page, yup. Honestly, I'm still in a bit of a shock because, what!? Where does this leave the canon, where does this leave Damien? Where does this leave Talia?

Truthfully the villain was not that imposing and rather forgetful, but I loved the character development and their portrayal. I was always a fan of Bruce/Talia together, so all their romance in this book was basically everything I ever wanted. Of course, with the added heartbreak since we know that they don't end up happily ever after with their children or anything like that.
