Very enjoyable prequel to Elatsoe! I was fully invested in Shane's quest. Yet, I didn't think it was perfect as the side characters could have been stronger and the brief wrap up of a major plot line was too brief. Also, the dog is FINE.

Ahh I love Darcie Little Badger! Such a delight to have another book from her, especially diving back into the world of Elatsoe - way back in time! And I mean WAY back. (Note the woolly mammoths on the cover.) Shane is now as dear to my heart as Elatsoe became, and we are thrown into another adventure filled with magical fairy ring portals and of course ghost dogs. The story is of course rich in Lipan Apache culture and beliefs, blending the magic and the ordinary - because for the Lipan Apache, magic is the ordinary. I loved the emphasis on community and family ties, and I really love it when horrible old men get what's coming to them. Absolutely adore this world and these characters. The ending made me tear up with emotion.
Moderate: Death
