Picked this up for Wifey but ended up reading it myself as well. Boo!
Book might have seemed funny if it weren't for those footsteps we hear in our old house, late at night...serious.

I have always been interested in ghosts and souls. I used to watch ghost hunting and medium shoes with my mom. I bought this book at a used booksale probably from the library. I loved learning more about souls that I didn’t know about. Also, reaffirming what I already believed was true and I really appreciated the tips on how to talk to souls and your guides. I look forward to reading more from him soon!
Really enjoyed this book. Not only interesting information about "The Other Side" but also about energy. He has some great exercises for you to be able to feel energy. He includes protection exercises and the last chapter is about enlightenment. His comments about living in your ego self vs your higher self and also how any negative energy directed at someone, even just in thought, can impact them stood out for me. I will definitely be picking up more of his books.
I am a big James Van Praagh fan - and hope to see him live one day. This book isn't for everyone - for me he helps describe many of my experiences over the years.
Written by the medium who is co-executive producer to the TV show Ghost Whisperer. He used to have his own show called Beyond.
Whether you believe or don't believe in ghosts or spirits or whatever, this book is well written and in a positive light. It ends with expressing ourselves in a more positive way and how powerful thoughts can be.

This author just stated everything as fact and it was too much for me to handle. I'm open to discussion and peoples personal thoughts and feelings, but to blatantly state something along the lines in violent video games and movies are responsible for a dark spirit realm? You lost me, buddy. Can't drink that koolaid.
James Van Praagh is a widely-respected medium who has written multiple books on the subject of ghosts and the afterlife. He also produces the CBS show The Ghost Whisperer, and so when I picked up his book Ghosts Among Us, there was an expectation to believe everything that Van Praagh had written as fact. It's easy to get caught up in the supposed "truths" that Van Praagh highlights in his book, but I'll do my best to review as unbiasedly as possible.
Van Praagh covers a lot of ground within his short book. He touches on the subject of what ghosts are, how they make contact with us, and protection chants that can help maintain personal positive energy. Throughout, he also retells experiences from his life within these realms of study, attempting to validate the claims he makes with some "true stories" of spiritual phenomena.
Yet writing a book like this has its risks, because no one can actually refute his claims unless they have experienced something similar themselves. It's impossible to say whether Van Praagh has written a factual account of the spirit world; with this in mind, the book reads more as a form of spiritual belief than "the truth about the other side" that the book's cover expresses.
Non-believers might not be swayed by Van Praagh's writing here, but for the most part, it would seem they wouldn't be attracted to a book like this anyway. Van Praagh does highlight forms of belief that seem to correspond with other types of spiritual worship, though, and there were some facts that I was really taken with. Whether they're believable or not is up to debate, and it should be left to the reader to take out what they want to believe about the afterlife and leave the rest to the future.
Van Praagh stays away from the religious side of spiritualism, which is admirable with a topic so closely related. His stories are entertaining, but some feel more fictitious than others, and again, it is the reader's choice on what to take away from them.
Yet for those who have an interest in the afterlife, Van Praagh paints a vivid and optimistic picture, one that stresses the effects of energy. It's such an interesting field that it's easy to get wrapped up in one medium's views. Go in reading with an open mind, and I urge you to use your own judgment and beliefs while traversing Ghosts Among Us.

I liked Van Praagh's explanation of getting to heaven. I enjoyed reading this book.
