A satirical masterpiece...with more resurrections than a Marvel movie. Voltaire proves that Germans too have a sense of humor.

This was fantastic. I thought perhaps I first read this in AP English in high school during the 80s but I didn't remember much of the story. This was a great way to start off 2019.
The happy-go-lucky, gullible, eternal optimist Candide subscribes to his teacher Master Pangloss's claim that he lives in the best of all possible worlds but after being kicked out of the castle in which he lives, Candide encounters seemingly every horrible circumstance the world can throw at a person. Natural disasters, mass murders, pestilence.....you name it, it is flung in to Candide's path. But it's not a horror story, it's a satire and a dark comedy. Through Candide's misadventures, Voltaire manages to skewer religion, war, slavery, colonialism, and other issues which plagued the eighteenth century. I laughed. Often.
This is a quick read, you can read this in a sitting or two. 4.5 stars.

Maybe I should read this when I'm a bit older. I fell asleep every time I started reading this book, an ended up inishing it just to say that I did. It was kind of boring and jumped from place to place a lot.

Bit of a confusing novel, but all the same, quite enjoyed it.
