Listen, I can't say it wasn't interesting. It totally was, but ??? How is it so boring at the same time? This book was written by Schroedinger's cat. Only he could produce such a juxtaposing tone.
My dad borrowed this to me, so I shall give you his review before giving my own: "I read it so I can say I've read Voltaire. The chapters are short, and if you really don't want to read it, the heading of each chapter tells you what's going on." He didn't like it very much either, lol
I dont even know how to tl;dr my experience with this book, so here is a deranged amalgamation of highlights:
⚠️Spoilers Ahead⚠️
*Absolutely crazy pacing. So much happens in so little time, it induced whiplash.
*Does anyone actually stay dead in this book?
*I know it's all satire, so its oozing with irony, but I have so much trouble decoding exactly the point Voltaire tries making every now and then. I struggle so much with satire unless I have done research on the event/theme the book in question is discussing. I get it, I guess. He was mocking his contemporary for saying creation is good, or whatever, but, like ??? Its annoying. Lol there i said it.
*Sometimes he just forces two characters to have really unbearably judgemental conversations about his contemporaries in the real world, and it's absolutely mundane. I don't so much mind him giving me a chapter about his takes on popular authors, but he could at least make it interesting, and not read like I'm watching a man scream into the void about his hatred for Milton.
*It is absolutely hilarious to me that Candide is such a simp for Cunegonde until she has the audacity to become ugly. Then he hates her and his life. Beautiful satirization of romance. I'm dead.
*The El Dorado chapter is my favorite one. I like the parallels between Biblical paradise, as well as the tone of Orpheus and Eurydice overlaying it. Genuinely, if the whole book was this specific struggle that Candide has, instead of him just latching onto whatever "Pangloss told him that one time~", I would adore this book.
Anywho: I get the point, I do. It was just so...word vomit-y, and needed soooooo much disjointedness to make his point. This reads like Voltaire, enraged by what his contemporary wrote, took a ton of ecstasy and fashioned a plot with a wimpy, somehow both unchanging and ever-chaning character as his protag. Weird stuff.
My sister-in-law says the musical is FIRE though, so maybe just watch that instead :)

It's a short book, with very short chapters. It's fast-paced and interesting. Very dark and philosophical. One piece of advice: don't read the chapter titles! Some of them contain spoilers.
