funniest book I've ever read

After all the fuss that gets made about this, I thought it was vastly over-rated. Simplictic stuff.

"all that is vey well... but let us cultivate our garden"

okay so we remember that this was written in 1758 (and some of it has NOT aged well) - oh my GOD I love morbidly satirical classics! that silly sweet man lives his whole life in the style of that one scene in home alone. what a romp.

I find this book interesting for the history behind it. Voltaire includes many different historical events and figures throughout the book. Candide is always traveling and meeting new people and suffering in extreme events- I wouldn’t be surprised if this book played a role in the creation of Forrest Gump. I also found it interesting how Voltaire seemingly used this book as a way to criticize other philosophers and people of high rank.

This is a bit of a difficult book to read, mainly just because my brain isn’t programmed to think in the era that this was written. It was an exceptionally quick read of traumatic events in search of love.
