Congratulations Voltaire, I Zane will controversially say you might be onto something. Truly this story captivated me and was a very fun journey through Voltaire’s pessimistic world view. Should one question how Voltaire felt about religion or philosophy then they need look no further. While no parts of this book were laugh out loud funny it was all enjoyable and many moments I’m sure I will not forget. It took me a second to get used to the writing style but other than that it was an incredible read. I will throw in at the end that you’re reading a 1700’s white guy so you’re gonna have to keep that in mind for the content within.

This book is really funny, it took some time to get accustomed to the writing style but I loved the travels and the mockery of philosophical debates that oddly still reflect some of the debates one hears while in college.

This is slaptick satire at its finest. Outrageous, over the top, outlandish, absurd...
As Candide travels through Europe enduring a vast assortment of mistreatment, it quickly becomes clear that rape, murder, torture, slavery, dismemberment: these are all states of being that are commonplace in Candide's world, accepted as a normal part of the human condition. Like you're deficient if they haven't happened to you.
"The law of nature teaches us to kill our neighbor. And this is how people behave all over the world."
The ugliest of human truths are stated with simplicity and practicality. Utimately I was left laughing over the absurdity of a society that would tolerate, let alone perpetuate, these states of being.
"What is optimism? It is the mania of maintaining that everything is well when we are wretched."
This 18th century French philosopher had some interesting bites to share.

This book surprised me. It's complex, fast-paced, and never ending in its attack on everything and everyone. A master class on how to burn it all down. Voltaire is definitely the Cobra Kai of satire.
