Enjoyable read and a good companion to Next Year in Havana. However I kept getting annoyed that Beatriz and Nick would have the same fight every time they were together.

It’s always hard when you start a book that has so many good reviews. And maybe I was really expecting too much from it? But I felt like the plot and characters for this book were really just meh. I am Cuban and I felt like that kept me going, it felt like my family’s story moving to Florida. I felt like she really wanted a strong leading lady and she fell short.

I tore through this book (as I do with all Chanel Cleeton’s novels). I love the historical Cuban setting mixed with the Florida setting. I can’t wait for another from her.

Beatriz Perez grew up wealthy in Cuba but after her twin brother was killed and the family fled Castro's Cuba nothing has been the same. Beatriz still lives a life of privilege but is now on the fringes of society and she is determined to avenge her brother's death. She makes unconventional choices as she allies herself with a handsome, engaged Senator and the CIA. But will she be able to avenge her brother and live the life she wants?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for my honest review.

I will definitely be checking out more of the Perez family’s stories! Really enjoyed the author’s writing & attention to the historical, cultural, & social details of the era. The time frame (the Cuban Revolution & Cuban Missile Crisis) is not well known to me and led to lots of googling to learn more about the events that transpired, which was very interesting. The book offers a lot: history, romance, espionage, suspense.

I missed a very small part that made a HUGE difference in the story and had to go back to re-listen a bit. Once I got everything sorted out it was smooth sailing. Wouldn’t expect that problem actually reading the book either; I was probably a bit distracted while listening.
