“This inhuman place makes human monsters.”
I went into this book anticipating being scared shitless… but I actually wasn’t. I was more sad than scared. The characters and their intricacies were so incredible. It wasn’t just a “horror”. It was psychological and nuanced. I have heard it was a very personal book to King and I can understand why. It was way more than I was expecting. I’m so glad I finally read it.
*I definitely want to watch the movie now too even though I have heard it is quite different.

Not as frightening as "It," but still pretty good. The movie is a horrible adaptation, if you're looking for a comparison. As always, read the book first.

I'm torn on this book. One one side the story is completely boring, predictable, and superficial. One the other side the method through which the story is delivered is masterful. So how do I review a book with such disappointing story that is delivered in such a way that I kept reading into the night from my desire to see how the writing continued to adapt and change as the story meandered forward.
Based on the merits of the story alone, The Shining would be a two star at best, but the writing and the way it evolves in the books is clearly five star. I think the evolution of the writing help bolster the story but not enough in my opinion. This is my third Stephen King book and the first one that left me a bit disappointed.
This is still worth reading because I have never read a book written in this manner where the story is carried forward as the style of writing continues to evolve throughout the book.
