This is a short but poignant tragedy. It was my first time reading something by Steinbeck, and I now understand why his works have withstood the test of time. The story does an excellent job of taking various distinct but isolated moments throughout and connecting them by the end. All the good and the bad in this story is very human.

Fair warning, there is a significant amount of racism in this story, including the N-word. However, the racism is portrayed in a negative light. Do with that information what you will.

You know those books you were forced to read as a kid and hated just because you were forced? That was me with this book, so I wanted to give it another try as an adult.

I even knew how this book ended, and still had a broken heart.

I think this book brings to light many important topics - a sense of longing, wanting to belong, deep platonic friendships/relationships, to name a few. Not to mention its ability to highlight just how much the world has changed since this book was written (1937).

I can see why this book is banned nowadays, but there is something so profound and classic about this story. The symbolism of the American dream with its potentially unobtainable nature is powerful.

TW: violence, murder

This was for sure interesting at the end but most of it happened at the end. Basically lennie forgets things and he accidentally hurts people, that’s like the first 70 pages. After that it gets better though. Since it was written a long time ago and during the Great Depression, it does use words that we have now deemed as racial slurs and hateful language. Also the poor dog dies.
