Beautiful and faithful adaptation—takes the excellent novel and adds without distorting.
A problem with both the book and the comic is that it begins with a gruesome murder scene—otherwise, we’d have something for most ages, ~6 and up—I remember that Stardust has a similar challenge—suitable for both adults and YA, but a vivid brief sex scene early on means the book gets put out of children’s reach. (It’s almost as if Mr. Gaiman doesn’t care about shelves and classification, and just wants to tell the stories he wants to tell... how dare he.)

I haven't read the novel yet, but now I want to more than ever. I love the structure of each chapter being more of less self-contained, but with a subplot that works through each story and pulls them together. I don't know how much Russell was in charge of collecting the various artists who visually depict each chapter, but it's a Who's Who of fantasy and horror virtuosos. The book looks lovely.
If I have one complaint, it's that the individual artists appear to be repressing their own, unique styles in favor of a unified look. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just the color palette that makes it all so consistent and I'm imagining the rest. But Kevin Nowlan, Tony Harris, Scott Hampton, and Jill Thompson have very different styles and I'd love to see that emphasized more.

Honestly the first 95% kinda dragged, but the last bit caught my attention and I’ve now placed the second book on hold at the library. I have not read the novel (which this graphic novel is based on) so cannot say how true to the story it stays.

Another book that I read for the Banned Books Week, which is this week. :)
Interesting book, but I disliked that the illustrations would hop around with each part. I was so used to one, and then the next would pop up. Some weren't even that pretty, I would even call them ugly, and that is a shame. I feel like the story lacked something as well, I know I liked the book more than I did this Graphic Novel.

Fun adaptation, I already loved the original story to pieces. Some of the art styles are hit and miss with me, but still great, and I look forward to the second volume.
