A good adaptation of [b:The Graveyard Book|2213661|The Graveyard Book|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1531295292l/2213661._SY75_.jpg|2219449] with some cool illustration styles. Each chapter is illustrated by a different artist. I especially enjoyed [a:Jill Thompson|9931|Jill Thompson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1254585081p2/9931.jpg]'s section. Volume 1 contains the first five chapters and interlude. It ends at a good stopping point to set up the next book.

The real issue I had with this book is that the shifting art styles were a bit disruptive for me. You spend the whole first chapter picturing Bod a certain way and then by chapter three you question what is going on in the world. The drastically different styles made the book read as different stories rather than one continue account of Bod's journey. I think it would have been better to only have one art style, but that's just my personal preference.

Also, while I've read the novel and know how Bod ends up in the graveyard, the opening pages were still a bit rough. They made a decision to show the open wounds, a decision I feel may turn some readers off to the book. A more subtle approach may have worked better. I was actually really surprised the opening scene was depicted in such a way.

Anyway, aside from those things, I thought this was a good book. I thought they did a great job of representing Silas especially. The stories were interesting and presented in a way that contributes well to the original material. Despite my distaste for the use of multiple illustration styles, I'm still planning on reading the second volume.

4.5 stars!! I loved this!! the humour is just up my street and i loved a lot of the illustrations in this (although there were some illustrators I preferred more than others) - a perfect spooky graphic novel

This was absolutely gripping. I love the mystery of Nobody and how he came to be part of the graveyard. I can't wait to read volume 2!

Would Gaiman's work be classed as bizzaro in some cases? Hmm...

This was such a great graphic novel! The story was very intriguing, but I'm still left with a lot of mystery. I was worried at first that having a different artist per chapter would break the flow and appear choppy but it did no such thing! In fact, it introduced me to a whole bunch or artists I'd never heard of and proves that Gaiman's work can fit ANY style.
The art used really fit each chapter wonderfully, especially the first chapter, illustrated by Kevin Nowlan, as it captured the action-y scenes perfectly.
I feel like I read some of chapter 4 somewhere before, because I recalled it as I read, but I can't for the life of me remember when or where this had taken place. This chapter had to have been one of my favourites too as I enjoyed the events and meeting another type of graveyard character.
This being split into two volumes I was also worried that it would definitely feel unfinished when I got to the end of the first volume, but no! Just like Lord of the rings is a massive novel, often spilt into readable chunks feels finished per book, this did too!
I did find that each chapter felt like a different story and found that this didn't simply follow one fluent plot, so I can imagine this would have done well as separate comics.
The writing did feel a tad choppy at some points, but I think that's just because the illustrations told a lot of the story and there wasn't need for too many words, what with being a graphic novel anyway.

A great story, some cool artists and an interesting baseline idea for a story!

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<

adventurous dark

The funny thing about graphic novels is that sometimes the images don't match with the images in your head as you read the book, but after the shock runs out, you find that you can't imagine it any other way.
Although the chapter with Ms Lupescu and the ghouls was drawn radically different from the rest of the book and that took me out of it longer than I thought it should.

Surprised that I enjoyed yet another Gaiman book???

This one is about a kid whose parents are murdered and he ends up living in a graveyard being raised by ghosts (and a vampire?). There is an interesting mix of stories here. Some are decidedly supernatural and focus more on the ghostly side of things, while others are fairly down to earth, especially when the kid (sorry, I don't recall his name and don't feel like looking it up) meets a girl who wanders into the graveyard and he tries to befriend her. There is also a plotline that interweaves itself throughout the book as the guy who killed this kids parents continues to try to track him down to complete his mission. The art is very good. I will definitely look for the second volume to finish off the story.

Really liked it. I grew to love the characters and the story. Its a childrens book and an adults book at the same time and i think that makes something special.
