I think I actually liked this graphic novel adaptation of The Graveyard Book better than the original. It's got the same basic premise of course, so it has the same plot elements that I enjoyed the first time around, but the addition of the gorgeous illustrations add a sort of fantastical element that I really enjoyed. Looking forward to reading Volume 2.
Didn't feel spooky to me. This book felt drawn out and I was frequently bored. Definitely rushed through it trying to just get it finished.
Truly forgettable in the best way possible. I only read this a year ago and already forget every character's name except Tamina, the attractive barista whose obsession with the love letters of her past leads her to push her loved ones away. As its title suggests, this is a book about forgetting. About aging. About realizing that what is so immediately now will very soon be so distantly then. At times tragic, at times hilarious, and never novelistic, it is quintessentially Kundera. Two quotes ended up in my quote journal, the second of which I've been known to read aloud to those precious few friends who know how to shut up and listen.
"When he asked her why she was so silent, she told she had not been satisfied with their lovemaking. She said he had made love to her like an intellectual."
"Everyone likes Tamina. Because she knows how to listen to people. But is she really listening? Or is she merely looking at them so attentively, so silently? I donду»t know, and itду»s not very important. What matters is that she doesnду»t interrupt anyone. You know what happens when two people talk. One of them speaks and the other breaks in: думItду»s absolutely the same with me, Iду_дуќ and starts talking about himself until the first one manages to slip back in with his own думItду»s absolutely the same with me, Iду_дуќ The phrase думItду»s absolutely the same with me, Iду_дуќ seems to be an approving echo, a way of continuing the otherду»s thought but that is an illusion: in reality it is a brute revolt against a brutal violence, an effort to free our own ear from bondage and to occupy the enemyду»s ear by force. Because all of manду»s life among his kind is nothing other than a battle to seize the ear of others. The whole secret of Taminaду»s popularity is that she has no desire to talk about herself. She submits to the forces occupying her ear, never saying: дуЦItду»s absolutely the same with me, Iду_"

I LOVED this book. The characters challenges had my heart racing. I literally had to stop reading at places (as I was spooked). I love the sprinkle of History throughout. I loved that there were moments that I was pissed, offended, and annoyed. It is precisely because the writing is so vivid. I felt like these things were happening to me. I was engaged and invested very quickly. I am so excited that I moved this up on my TBR. Thanks for the emotional rollercoaster!

Great graphic novel! The art style is beautiful and the novel was adapted very well into the graphic novel format. Would appeal to younger readers and adults alike.
