I enjoyed this. The pacing made it hard to put down although at times felt a bit redundant. This is a a genre I typically avoid, but it really is more gothic versus horror. Though there were some gory elements it wasn’t so dramatic that I will lose sleep over it.

I was worried this book would be too graphic or gory for me. But while this book was dark and everyone slowly developed into a mushroom man, it had its determination to find a way out and generally happy ending. I wasn’t too grossed out by the events, and idk if it has more to do with me not reacting as much to the written word vs. cinema or if it was just tastefully described. 

My one complaint with this book is that I wish it wove in Noemi’s Mexican culture and background more. I’ve enjoyed other books by Latina authors where I feel forced to catch up, read some Spanish, and respect that this book isn’t written for me. But this book felt more catered to and leaned on the English influences. In reading the author’s note, I respect the author’s chosen format and background, inspired by the real-life English mining towns throughout Mexico that left ghosts and scars behind. 

I appreciated the hopeful message of Francis’s character arc, resisting, trying to choose another way, and living on believing it (being the spores) are not in the blood and destined to consume him. He chooses to walk away from what is cursed and need not be rebuilt by him or other colonizers.
