A guide for those who’ve never had to think about TB outside the opera.

I'm a healthcare worker in a TB-riddled country, so this hit close to home. Sometimes it still baffles me that TB is rare in other parts of the world when it's become so normalized where I live (even these Storygraph reviews saying they didn't know about TB are wild to me).

The book pulled at my heartstrings and I especially enjoyed the chapters on earlier history! I did think it was repetitive at times, but it was short enough to avoid feeling dragged out.

I feel like I learned so much, and realised I basically had no idea what tuberculosis even was??
I got a little teary a few times (combined with pms but still)
I also liked how this book did that thing where it feels like some secret undercurrent in the world is being revealed. How there are all these systems and powers at play that affect everything (human, animal, environment) and they can be so invisible until you start questioning things and pulling at threads and discovering connections. Like people not being able to afford life saving medication because filthy rich corporations want to keep getting richer. It’s terrifying finding out that these things are literally happening in our world.

Going to see John Green at an author event and wanted to read this before he talks about it lol! Very informative without being overwhelming. The only knowledge I had about TB was in relation to zoonotic diseases from a previous job, and now I have some other perspectives to consider.

When people ask "is everything really about racism?" or "is everything really about capitalism?" yes. yes it is.
