In my opinion this has a very pretentious tone to it, but it certainly contains valuable information. Good for those who are starting or considering starting their vegan journey.

...the strongest and most convincing argument for eating a non-animal diet. Well reasoned and well written.

A good "Start Here" book or "Veganism for Dummies" for anyone wanting to understand and be able to talk about animal rights and veganism without having to trudge through overly philosophical lingo. Francione takes the more philosophical arguments in the case against eating animals and cuts them down into 1-2 page chapters, answering the FAQs of veganism in layman's terms. This is a GREAT book for 1) anyone who is unfamiliar with veganism 2) anyone who would like short but well argued points to use in situations where you are put on the spot and asked to justify your decision to be vegan or to answer the "what about plants?" question without going over people's heads or seeming like a haughty know-it-all asshole. This book makes a really great gift or addition--nay, THE MOST CRUCIAL addition--to any "Vegan Starter Kit" or care package. It is a very short read (I read it in an hour), inexpensive, and is now offered in many languages!

If you've never read Francione or are unfamiliar with his work, start here.

Absolutely amazing book. It really helped me examine my own beliefs and assumptions when it comes to animals and food. It was a key piece of my decision to become vegan.

Prefacing this review by saying I am an animal rights activist who makes a big effort to eat as plantbased as I can. This book is supposed to be in line with what I believe, and in many ways it is. The problem is that it is extremely badly written, which may not be a problem for people who don't care about things like providing sources for your arguments or showing proof when making wild generalizations. I honestly have a hard time believing anyone who isn't already into animal rights and/or veganism would read this and be convinced of the points it's making, but maybe I'm wrong.

Francione has a tendency to repeat himself, but overall this book is a really good resource.
