Really compelling narrative that explores an chapter of Canadian history that is not discussed.
Genevevie is without a doubt one of my favourite Canadian Authors and I love how she takes a point in Canadian History, usually something that is seen as a footnote in our History Classes and tells these engaging stories that will make you smile from ear to ear while simultaneously crying your eyes out.
................
Her latest novel is about the Canada Home Children which I knew nothing about even with a degree in Canadian History. The story is from the dual perspective of Winnie and Jack. Two friends who were sent to from an orphanage in England to Canada where they are told they would receive a better life. But when they get there it's not anything they have been promised.
..................
I can't recommend this book enough, and if you are one who enjoys audiobooks this one is excellent. I devoured this story because it was fantastic and the narrators were engaging.
.................
One thing I also like is the authors ability to write not only multi dimensional female characters but also swoon worthy male characters who over time are broken and scarred by the trauma of war during a time where men had no where to turn to receive help regarding their mental health/ptsd and the harsh reality of why people my age and my parents can remember their grandparents and parents as being hardened and cold, even though they wanted to do better and but didn't know how.
..................
Anyway I can gush about this book all day. However I encourage you to pick it up instead to find out for yourself. If you are looking for some solid Canadian Historical Fiction Genevieve's novels are a must. Can't wait to see what she covers next.
