This was not as good as I expected it to be based on the reviews I'd read, but it was a good read nonetheless.
I feel lucky/proud to have even been able to finish this book - I feel like it's the first one I've read start to finish since I went back to work in September, so this is as much of a review as you'll get from me!

I really loved this book. I had never heard of the Home Children who were shipped out of England and sent to other countries. This poignant, heartbreaking novel was a page turner for me. I kept wanting to know more about the child characters in the book and what became of their lives. I also loved the author’s explanation of who her book came to be and the photos she shows of the Home Children.

This book does what all good historical fiction should do. It makes me want to learn more about these children who were treated so poorly. I highly recommend this book.

My great grandmother was one of Bernardo's British Home Children, and came to Canada as a teen, similar to the characters in this book. It's inspired me to learn more about her life. I will definitely read more from this author. I highly recommend this book, and learning about a piece of history that many Canadians and British (and other British colonies too apparently) were not really aware of.

Very interesting story. Very close to 4 star but I found the characters a little one-dimensional and I'm all about characters.

3.5 stars. This novel was thoroughly researched and a really interesting perspective on a chapter of Canadian history that I knew nothing about. The biggest drawback for me was that I didn't particularly enjoy the author's writing style.

Genevieve Graham has documented a part of Canada’s history that I knew very little about. I did learn about Home Children several years ago but I didn’t know the massive number and years involved in this tragic history. This novel portrays some startlingly facts based on true stories of the desolute British children forced into slavery in Canada.

Five big stars

I knew from the moment that I came across this book I would love it. ❤️

All Canadians should read this book... how did I not know about this dark aspect of our country’s history?! Beautifully written and highly recommended
