Who doesn't like a good old sexual abuse and its effects story? You don't? Then I guess you don't watch Lifetime and you shouldn't read this book.
challenging emotional sad slow-paced

I had trouble starting engaged with the plot and storyline, not sure if it was due to narration or what but I didn't guess the ending until a few sentences before the reveal so that was a nice surprise.

wow! usually not my type of book, but it was great. don't want to say too much, but the ending is a surprise. poor little carrie and emma. i feel so bad. but stuff like this happens all the time.

This was a sad book about a girl who had to make up a sister to survive the trauma of her life. Her mother doesn't save her from her step-fathers abuse and actually leaves her alone with him. It's heartbreaking.

Maybe I have read too many books with this plot, but I had it figured out in the first chapter, which took away from the thriller this book was hyped to be. However, it is a very well-written story about a subject that is easily dismissed because no one wants to get involved in someone else's business.

Emma and Carrie are warm, brave, suffering characters. When Carrie's mom tells her that she hates her, hates the way she walks, the way she talks, hates everything about her, I wanted to throw the book across the room because Liv had made me so angry. How could she talk to her daughter like that!

Liv, of course, is living in her own hell.

One of the first reviews I read about this book mentioned how heartbreaking the story was, and they were 100% right. There is a bit of a twist at the end which caught me by surprise, and makes me want to go back and re-read it to see how it all plays out. Very well done.

I don't know if I can say I really liked this book due to the subject matter, but it kept my interest and I was anxious to see how it ended. I actually also liked how the author wrote the story from the perspective of an 8 year old girl from the south.

Wow what a haunting book! I felt so terrible for Carrie and Emma, and all they went through. The ending was baffling I didn't see it coming *SPOILER* .............................................................. I saw that Richard dying was coming, but not about Emma not exsisting, although when the teacher leaves because she's expecting and Carrie doesn't know what that means I thought "But she's older than Emma, so she would have been around when her momma was pregnant. I also disliked the part about how the father that Carrie adored died, not because of a robbery, but because he was cheating on his wife :(
All in all an amazing story that left quite the impression

Wow. An emotional journey from start to finish. I can't begin to imagine the life of a little girl so poor, neglected, and abused. This is certainly not my favorite genre of book but it sure puts life into perspective quickly.
A great story.
fast-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated

It's hard to say you love a book when it’s a very sad story about child abuse. The book was definitely a page turner for me because I wanted to find out what happened to Caroline and Emma. I just kept hoping they would make it as they were running away. And, there is a special place in hell for people like Richard.  I did NOT see that ending coming.
