Me And Emma

The ending! This book was written SO well! I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what was happening and what was going to happen. The ending totally came out of left field but looking back the signs were all there. I will definitely look forward to reading more from this author.

Read it in one sitting. Another "Can't Put It Down" story. I had the "secret" figured out pretty early in the book but had to stay with it for the main character to figure it out. A very sad story overall, but the writer did an excellent job writing from the perspective of an abused 8 year old. Highly recommend it!

Highly predictable, slow and dull; at least for my taste. Maybe I read too much but I connected the dots about Emma in the first 25 pages.

I'd warn against spoilers in this review, but I think Goodreads gives away a lot in its summary. I didn't actually read that description before reading the book. The back cover portrays the book quite differently.

This book was terribly sad, but also very compelling. It's told in the voice of 8 year old Carrie, which I really enjoyed. Flock is able to hide some of the details of what's going on, and it's believable that they've been left out because I assumed that Carrie doesn't fully understand everything herself because of her age.

In the beginning of the book I appreciated the way the girls seemed to alternate roles - who was the leader, who was the brave one, etc. Later in the book as Carrie began to distance herself from Emma, I felt it was out of character. I didn't understand how she could send Emma home alone while going off the Mr. Wilson's or Orla Mae's alone.

Throughout the whole book I just wanted someone to help the girls: Mr. White, Miss Mary, Gammy, anyone! I predicted one tiny piece of the ending when Carrie befriended Mr. Wilson, but I was still blown away at the close. I am always horribly naive. And as Goodreads says, I am tempted to read it again, but I probably won't.

I'm sticking with my average rating since that's how I felt through most of the book. While I did breeze through this book, it was more because I had a lot of spare time this week and because I'm not reading anything else that I am absolutely loving at the moment.

After reading review after review of this book and letting sit on my actual bookshelf for a few years, I finally decided I should read this book because everyone was raving it about. Now, I'm now quite sure everyone was. The shocking event didn't happen until 30 pages before the book ended and the mere reason I even hung onto this book was purely because I can't book a down! Otherwise, this one wouldn't have been read all the way through. Don't waste your time with this one. It has it's moments but the only reason this book would ever be worth reading is for the ending... and even then I wouldn't recommend it.

Wow! What a twist at the end!! I was a little shocked to say the least.

WOW. I can't even form coherent thoughts right now because of that twist. I am blown away. It's one of those twists so well done that it basically requires you to start the book over. will write a better review in due time--still processing this emotional journey i've just endured.

This is it! The book I've been trying to remember the title of for YEARS, literally! Not a perfect book, but one that will stick with you long after you finish it. Obviously. ha ha

I saw the twist coming but did not find it convincing, and I don't feel like the conclusion really resolved any of the underlying issues.
