Just okay. By far my least favorite of the series. I should have known by the title that I would be mad and sad. The story just didn't move as well as the previous books, it seemed a little jumbled and rushed. I really liked these characters and the series as a whole, just disappointed in the ending as far as the plot went and the writing wasn't as good.

A disappointing end to one of my favorite series in recent years.

This did not end the way I thought it would, it dead stopped in the middle of a major fight ... Which seems like it would make for a good 5th book. But I guess we are at an end pass for Celine and Bastine. I have absolutely adored this series and I can't wait to go to New Orleans and see this beautiful city for all it is.

I do not think there has been a more horrific decline of a character in a series history. My god Celine is horrendous.

Arjun and Pippa deserved better and were the only truly interesting characters in this series.

This book was a mess with an awful ending to this series.

Okay. I've put it off long enough--it's time to review my final book of 2023. I'm glad I finished this one and have finished out this series, but a lot of the time I sincerely had no clue what the author was trying to set up or what direction the story was going in. I feel like I've been disappointed with this series in some way or another since book one and this one just topped all the rest.

I will say that I like the setting and the world in this series. The characters are mostly okay. At least in the other books. In this one? Everyone felt so weird or out of character. There were some things I expected the author to expand upon but it's like she started unraveling this thread for us to pick apart as the reader and then suddenly just decided she wasn't going to take the story in that direction anymore. It felt a bit aimless. I think Celine is probably the character who was done the worst by the author in this entire series. Pippa ended up being a shining star for me in the back half of the series. I especially appreciated the way she refused to forgive Celine for what she did at the end of the book. I want to try to find more to say about this one but it doesn't feel like it's worth much more of my time or concentration.

Overall, this was a mess of a series and none of the books more so than this one. The characters felt so out of character, the story meandering, and the overall arc of the series flimsy at best. The three stars are for the setting and world building as well as Pippa being the best character in the book.

I am so disappointed by this ending. Like...what even happened? Three amazing books leading up to this and it kind of feels like the author didn't care how it ended. I can even see her building up to this depressing ending, but it was not well done because there was sooo much rambling in this book and the ending was so rushed that I had to relisten a few times. Basically we get to know all these characters in the series just so they can be collateral damage in Celine and Bastien's toxic love story. I used to love Celine as the strong interesting character and in this book she was completely different and doesn't use her brain and just acts better than everyone. And the jumping around between POVs was just too chaotic.

This was an absolute shitshow of a finale and completely ruined all character development and world building of the first 3 books. Truly heinous
