I think Renée is an amazing writing and I really enjoyed the first three books in this series. However, this fourth book was a let down for me. It felt disjointed and directionless. For 400 pages you are denied resolution to various plot points that were introduced in the previous books. All for it to culminate in a very unsatisfying, depressing, and disappointing ending. While I maintain that the writing was beautiful, overall I’d say that this book was a flop.
I’m so disappointed.
We didn’t get an ending pov from Pippa who just experienced the worst imaginable situation.
A couple who we fell in love with didn’t even get a voice at the end. We didn’t get to feel their loss. And the death was glanced over like I had to double check to even realize he died.
Did Celine ever learn the truth about her mother’s intentions?
Did Haroun make it home?
Was the mirror destroyed?
Nahhhh if I was pippa I wouldn’t talk to her either.
I get the Celine was blinded but she never got the truth?? And it took 10 years? And honestly with how it ended that wouldn’t be enough. If she thought he really killed her mother for spite why would she even care about him then.
Eloise ?
I’m guessing there will be a spinoff cause it was just sooo unfinished.
Celine was lonely for 10 years and is barely reigniting a connection.
Emilie was annoying.
So ridiculous.

I'll be honest the ending of the series was a little... underwhelming? I enjoyed the lore throughout the books but the ending felt, rushed? It was definitely well written but I'll be honest I thought the story would end in a different direction. I'm not saying it needed to have a happy ending but maybe more than just a fizzled out ending.
3.5 stars. This is not a bad book, but certainly not how I wished for it to end. I adored Bastian and Celine's relationship from the very beginning. Their chemistry and their romance was what got me soo hooked into this romance. It was heartbreaking to see the direction The Ruined took. All over a single miscommunication. Celine acted so very irrational and did not even want to entertain giving her lover just a chance to explain. Bastian was also an annoying lad as well with him not being able to exert a little bit more patience and self-control. I did not like this story about the whole traveling mirror. I dislike time travel plots where there are just infinite possibilities now and all consequences be damned, because we can change it. UGH! And the ending brushed over the whole New Orleans family and what of them. I feel a bit cheated since the previous books invested so much in those side characters, and all we got was a one page summary on them. The book is still very beautifully written, just the plot came through as not well thought through and seemed like the author herself didn't know what to do with the direction she ended up with.
The absolute disappointment and disbelief I had finishing this book cannot be described. All the beautiful world building and characters we learned about the last 3 books have been tossed aside, with everything spiraling into chaos and messy conclusions with the last 80 pages.
It ruined the whole series for me, and I highly suggest just stopping with the third book and creating a new ending for yourself.
