Bad Tourists is a standalone title written by Caro Carver.

What to expect:

*Post divorce girls trip

*Domestic abuse

*Twisted ending

Kate was the sole survivor of a mass murder where Camilla lost her brother and Darcy lost her boyfriend. The three women have formed a friendship and are now celebrating a girls post divorce trip in the Maldives.

On the island another murder happens and the three women are thrown back into intense situations that bring up old feelings and questions from the 2001 mass murder incident.

Written well, the audio version was a little confusing due to the multiple POV’s being narrated by the same voice.

Described as a "The White Lotus" meets "Lucy Foley's The Guest List", Bad Tourists follows three friends as they head on a swish holiday to the Maldives.

Kate, Camilla and Darcy are there to celebrate Darcy's divorce from her husband Jacob. It's also an opportunity for the women to escape a particularly horrible anniversary back in the UK - in 2001, Kate was the sole survivor of a massacre that took place in a guest house. Because of 9/11, the tragedy was buried in the news - but someone has made sure Kate will never forget what happened.

I hadn't read a thriller in a long time, and when I found out that Caro Carver was also CJ Cooke, I was excited to read this. I had previously enjoyed "The Lighthouse Witches" by this author.

This one - not so much. While I appreciated that it didn't follow the same formulaic whodunnit checklist employed by many "Summer Holiday" thrillers, I felt that the storyline descended into pure chaos about halfway through and never really recovered. There were a lot of side characters to keep track of (I'm still not entirely sure why the half of them were introduced or if all arcs were even wrapped up) and the reasoning behind the main crime was weak. I thought the character development was good, with Camilla being the standout personality for me.

I think if you're a fan of this genre and enjoy ripping through a murder mystery/thriller, then you may enjoy it. Unfortunately, it wasn't my cup of tea.

Thank you to the publisher (who I won't tag) for granting me approval to read an ecopy via @netgalley.
