Krakauer is a wonderful writer who knows how to keep people hooked from the very beginning of the story. He’s also very honest in the book about what climbing is like on Everest and his regrets for his role in not helping others on the mountain.
While reading the book, I was constantly feeling like he was either attacking the women who were also climbing or just severely writing them off as weak and maybe they shouldn’t be there. His attack on Sandy Hill Pittman is the biggest evidence of that.
It’s also frustrating when krakauer keeps repeating “they should have done this” or “that was a bad decision”. Obviously hindsight is 50/50 but constantly saying this while writing about a disaster where eight people died is slightly tone deaf. Krakauer reminds me of the guys who say “well obviously they should have done this” when they weren’t there to help or anything
