I listened to this on a long drive home with my husband and we both really enjoyed it.
I watched Everest when it came out so I knew a lot of what to place but the book goes deeper into mountaineering history and technical details which I appreciated.
The narration was very good and the accents were well done.
Apparently there was criticism of Krakauer's reporting/account/actions when this was published but I thought it was pretty objective, especially given he was actually there, in the thick of it. My husband and I both thought he was pretty impartial in his telling of it. I didn't feel like he short changed anyone in particular and I feel for the guy. Such a harrowing experience that I'm not sure anyone could say what they would or wouldn't do under those conditions.
There are a lot of people involved so it is a bit harder to keep everyone straight in your head to begin with, but that couldn't really be helped in this story.

A great adventure story. It was a very detailed play by play of his summit of Everest in 1996, at times, too detailed.
It is an interesting look into the psyche of people who feel the need to climb big mountains and how obsession can push people past their limits into fatal territory.

I listened to this on audiobook - the book was about 8 hours long and pretty much every chapter was gripping and well-told.
Besides recounting the details of the 1996 Everest disaster, Krakauer clearly illustrated how difficult high altitude climbing is. Reading about the decisions and mistakes that led up to the disaster was heart wrenching, but I think Krakauer did a good job of recounting the story without directly blaming too many people. Still, it was so hard to hear “it didn’t occur to them at the time that [insert one of many climbers] might be in trouble!” over and over again. Krakauer made it easy to understand that with low oxygen, lots of money and pressure on the line, terrible luck and extreme fatigue, it would be very easy to make a wrong decision (or many wrong decisions). Besides that, he also vividly described the beauty of climbing Everest and the call that many felt to get to the summit, often at the expense of their lives and health. I also appreciated his honesty about his part in the tragedy, and his difficulty coping with the aftermath.
