  • “Above the comforts of Base Camp, the expedition in fact became an almost Calvinistic undertaking. The ratio of misery to pleasure was greater by an order of magnitude than any mountain I'd been on; I quickly came to understand that climbing Everest was primarily about enduring pain. And in subjecting ourselves to week after week of toil, tedium and suffering, it struck me that most of us were probably seeking above all else, something like a state of grace.”

I found this very measured! Was extremely surprised to find out there had been controversy, especially over how people were portrayed - I never felt negatively towards anyone based on how they were talked about in the book, and I thought it was pretty clear that everyone was doing their best at the time; it's just that your best means nothing when faced against nature. I also liked how it stressed that it wasn't a unique tragedy! It refused to senstationalise the experience.

Lovely lovely style of writing. Made me want to devour everything he has written.

Absolute page turner. I could not stop reading. The haunting detail that Jon tells in his story is incredible in the most emotionally gripping way.

As someone who has only recently done a few small climbs and struggled greatly to even reach the summit of a 3,907 ft mountain this past winter, borrowing a mix-match of winter gear because i didn't even own any except brand new, unworn boots - I both had a faint appreciation for the kind of feats that were discussed even in the beginning of the book, and understood that I could not grasp even a little bit of the true effort and difficulty that comes from this climb.

Nevertheless, I was transported right there to Everest through these pages and felt emotionally attached to the story as it unfolded.
