One of the first books I fell absolutely in love with and got me back into reading !! It’s so romantic, funny, the found family makes me sob but it’s also so emotional. I ADORE all the characters and love how fleshed out and lovable they are. The missions are so fun to read and it checks off so many of my favorite tropes! It’s a book I think about so often. It’s not without its fault as it’s MXTX but it’s one of MXTX’s only good works in my opinion. If you really wanna read it though please check the content warnings. In other words I love hualian so much I never stop thinking about them </3

I feel the sheer length of this full novel is definitely a detriment to this first volume for me. Even reading it for the first time I thought it suffered from a slow pace and very low stakes, but I think it's essential to have nonetheless to establish a jumping off point to get involved in more of the heavier, more character-driven chapters to come. I feel we had to see these characters in comparatively low-stakes situations to get to know them so we can then build on that knowledge throughout the rest of the novel. My opinions and feelings on the Banyue arc have definitely changed as I've grown from when I first placed my silly little eyes on the fan translation close to 2 years ago, naturally, as is the Nature Of Growth and I must say I adore Banyue & Pei Xiu after letting them settle in my brain for a while. They r just two teenagers (comparatively) with Shady Pasts and I feel like they should kiss about it. I feel like a lot of the exposition I originally read was shortened significantly in the edits, but I'm not sure if the fog of time passing has tainted that memory or not, but I definitely enjoyed the Sinner's Pit more this time around whether there were significant changes or not. Overall!!! If this was a bit slow for you but you enjoy the characters and themes introduced I encourage you to stick with it and pick up volume 2! Sticking with it till the end solidified this bad boy as one of the most influential pieces of fiction I have ever read.
