This book just kept me in its clutches from the moment I cracked open the spine, it's so hypnotising (ha) and wrapped up in mystery, I loved it.
Decent story slow beggining but I look forward to reading the others.

I might be biased because I read these the first time when I was a child, but these books (the whole series) are enjoyable and relaxing to read as an adult as well, the story always gets interesting and intriguing throughout the book.

The first half was hard to get into. The plot was a bit meandering and if I read this as a child I probably would’ve DNF’d it. I’m glad I stuck it out because the second half was so much more enjoyable for me.
First of a great fantasy series for 9+ years.
Mystery, adventure, tested loyalties, and a battle of wits between good and bad characters (not sure if anyone can be labelled as evil yet).
At Bloor's Academy, a boarding school, talented children wear a specific colour cape and tie which divides them into blue for Music, purple for Drama, and green for Art. They are child prodigies. However, some children are the 'endowed' who possess an extraordinary talent, gifted to them through their ancestry to The Red King. We learn very early that Charlie is endowed and can hear voices from photographs.
The Children of the Red King series should be recommended to Harry Potter fans, even though this series is different... Harry Potter lives in a magical wizarding world, whereas Charlie Bone lives in an ordinary world.
This first book is aimed at younger readers, and I hope Charlie grows older throughout the series. I'll definitely be reading more to see how he and his friends/foes develop and mature.

Used as an audiobook to help me sleep so will pass on a rating!
This was a childhood favourite of mine, it does feel a bit younger but a good replacement for another well known wizard boy series. I will also add that I easily read through and enjoyed these as a child when I couldn't with the latter after a number of attempts. So they are definitely better written too!
If I have to be reallyyy picky I do think I love Nimmo's "the snow spider" series a little bit more :)

3.5 Stars. The feel is very similar to the Chronicles of Chrestomanci, but not quite as fun or charming. But still fun. :)
