At last, selamat berpetualang di Bloor’s Academy bersama Charlie dan kawan-kawan. Ngomong-ngomong saya suka sekali sama Fidelio dan keluarganya. Hidup mereka ceria dan seperti tanpa beban. Rumah mereka senantiasa dihiasi dengan bunyi beragam alat musik. Kereeen.

And, 4 dari 5 bintang deh untuk Charlie. I really liked it.

2024 re-read:
The Comfort Read (TM). Picking this back up for a re-read just as we approach Fall is the best choice ever. Before I read Harry Potter, there was Charlie Bone. I understand the comparison but it is more like an X-men scenario. I love seeing the old gang once again. Everyone is so lovable.

This is a reread for me of this book. The first time I read it in 2010, it really felt like a more dull version of Harry Potter. I never finished the series, so I figured I would now. I decided to start over since it's been years since I read it. I'm no longer comparing it to Harry Potter, but it's still just okay. My copy from the library says it's young adult, but I think it reads more for the 8-12 age group. The writing is simple and not very descriptive. I will keep going with the series for now because I feel like maybe it picks up? I can't remember.

This was one that I loved growing up.
The biggest thing to note about this book is it was written for children. The plots are interesting and understandable. The characterizations are vivid if a bit one-dimensional. The writing style is simple and clear, but a bit lackluster for adult readers (though not necessarily a ruining point).
My favorite thing about this book is they way it brought magically gifted and normal people together. Most of Charlie's friends aren't gifted, and Charlie doesn't have a particularly flashy or strong gift. Unlike most "kid with magic powers" books, it gives a strong impression that it's okay to be normal.
A lot of people have said that it's similar to Harry Potter-- there is a special school, but it's more like a normal private academy where they stick the kids with strange powers to keep an eye on them. To American readers there will be more similarities like various houses that come with it being a British School written by a British author. I think it enjoyed a boost from the Harry Potter craze, but it won't appeal to all Harry Potter fans and it can appeal to people who disliked Harry Potter. It was written for younger readers than Harry Potter, and it shows. There is very little in the way of violence, and as the series progresses it never moves out of the 4th-6th grade interest level, unlike Harry Potter.

This wasn't my cup of tea and I'm not certain it would have been if I was younger as I preferred books that were happier and more whimsical. I doubt I will read on but I will most likely look up spoilers for the rest of the series as it was a decentish concept.

I feel like this book should only get 3 stars out of me... but I just couldn't.
Now, if you decide to read this book, don't expect awesomeness or brilliance or originality... because it's definitely not any of those things.
But... I still found it intriguing.
Intriguing enough that I now want to read the next book. And that's saying something.

After the discover of his "magically" abilities, Charlie Bone is sent off to a boarding school run by some pretty evil figures where he and his new friends must figure out the mystery of the baby who was traded. Lots of similarities to Harry Potter but still original enough to be quite enjoyable.
