Terrifyingly scintillating.
Marissa Meyers has done it again. This story is a darkly woven romance that captures you from the first sentence until the final. I couldn’t put this book down! I even read it between cooking my thanksgiving dishes.
I seriously didn’t know what to expect with this one. My mind wasn’t sure if the undead aspect could tie in with a fairytale, I didn’t think it was even doable. But I should’ve known, after all, this is the woman who mechanized Cinderella and did it impeccably!
Serilda is easily my new favorite book character. I loved reading through her POV as she tried to outwit the unfortunate cards that she’s been dealt in life. Her story is so tragic and enthralling, it was so great getting to solve mysteries with her and experience her first love. Felt like I was right there beside her!
Gild is another amazing character and ties for close second! Even though he’s not the main character, I would LOVE to read from his POV. He’s so achingly sweet, my heart would pound every time he came into a scene! His and Serilda’s story is so painful and heartwarming. I need to see their happy ending!!!
I had no idea this would be a duology until I got to page 420 and realized there were WAY too many unanswered questions. I’m so excited to see the next book! I’m DYING to solve the mysteries of the Alder King!

This is a pretty common fairytale retelling (Rumpelstiltskin) but I thought it was well done and a fast-paced read despite the 500+ page length. Structure-wise this started out very similar to [b:Spinning Silver|36896898|Spinning Silver|Naomi Novik|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1513872748l/36896898._SX50_.jpg|58657620], which I also really enjoyed, but the plot quickly diverged, so it didn't feel like reading the same story.
I liked that the main character's special trait was relevant to the plot rather than just being something that set her apart as your typical fantasy/YA protagonist. Even though the book ended on a cliffhanger, I thought the story overall had enough payoff to justify it and I'll definitely pick up the next one.
