This was so fun. I did not see where the story was going. Some plot points took me by surprised entirely. A truly unique twist on Rumplestiltskin.

Gilded by Marissa Meyer is a dark and captivating Rumpelstiltskin retelling that drew me in far more than I anticipated. The book started a bit slow, but once I got into the world and the lore, I ended up listening to the audiobook in less than two days, which is something, for sure!
I totally identified with Serilda as the main heroine. She was perhaps naive for some readers, but I found her to be relatable and never annoying. The romance with Gild was sweet and pleasant (although perhaps came across as slightly sudden, but I was listening in 3x speed). He is a romance interest I really would love to see return in the next novel.
What actually impressed me the most was the gothic, dark horror folklore and haunted castle atmosphere. Being a German native speaker myself, I did find a slight jarring in some strange translations ("Vergoldet Geist" rather than "Vergoldeter Geist"), but otherwise, I still appreciated Meyer weaving German mythology into the story.
Not everything played for me, the pregnancy plotline especially, but overall this was so enchanting, so romantic, so evocative that I read the sequel without hesitation.
