“All I have to do is fence.”

Se está poniendo mejor!!!
lighthearted fast-paced

June 2022. A graphic novel series about a high school fencing team at an all-boys boarding school. It gives vibes of a possible very slow burn romance between the two leads, but we mostly see gay romance from unrequited crushes of side characters and a side character playboy type.

Our main character is a scrappy underdog who is determined to fence because his father who abandoned him is a famous fencer, and our other lead is a rival who is a wealthy and well-trained elite. Naturally they can’t stand each other, are nothing alike, and are forced to become roommates.

I really like that this series builds up the personalities and friendships between a variety of characters, and takes it’s time building our leads from enemies to rivals with genuine respect for one another.

So far there are 4 volumes out and I read them all in one sitting, as ebooks through the Libby app (can get ebooks and audiobooks free through your local library). I’m looking forward to checking out volume 5 when it comes out later this year.

“Fence” volume 2 by C.S. Pacat, Johanna the Mad, and Joana LaFuente.

This series is so full of heart and I'm rushing through each page and wishing there was more.

This series has got the anime sports rivals vibe down pat.

My Recommendation: Honestly, at this point wait for the final volume to be out and/or wait for the graphic novel. I'm sure if they're doing a proper full-length graphic novel it will be better than this serialized comic. That being said I did finally read about Pacat's Captive Prince trilogy and I may have to check that out. She does seem to tell a good story.

My Response: Still not quite doing it for me. It's interesting and a fun quick read, but it's just not as good as the Bob's Burgers comics I've been reading (here and here) or even the wonderful Check, Please!

For me, this series will be 100 times more powerful once it's all released and it can be put into one compendium. The amount of time between my reading of Volume 1 and this one, and the time until Volume 3 is released will be too far.
