Urgh, what a terrible twist towards the end. it was like two different books.

Loved it (extremely depressing ending, though).

One of the very few cases where I liked the movie better. But I saw the movie first, so maybe that's part of it.

I just finished this book, and to be quite frank I’m once again stunned. Having finished Mystic River recently I wanted to try Lehane again, and boy did he deliver!

Lehane does not hold anything back and may be one of the best Mystery/Crime writers. He doesn’t hold back and tries to keep everything realistic, even if that means the endings are not happy.

Once again I’m left wondering what is right and what is wrong.

This whole series has been grimy and engrossing. In the end, it turns out that just about every character has tried to do the right thing and they've all missed the mark.

Dennis Lehane just seems to have a way to suck me into a book. Even though I've already seen the movie, and already know exactly what's going to happen, I still sit there reading, heart racing, biting my nails. The same thing happened when I read Shutter Island, after already seeing the movie about five times. Plus it's kinda neat when you live in the same area that the book takes place in. A strange experience for me happened yesterday: I'm walking home, listening to the audiobook, and I get to the part about a crime happening on East 1st St in Southie, and I pass East 1st St right at that moment. I almost wanted to go down and explore the warehouse.

Not as bleak as I expected, based on other comments I've read. Sad and depressing, yes, but not Cormac-McCarthy-THE-ROAD-bleak. The teaser at the end for his newest Kenzie/Gennaro book actually made it better; takes out some of the finale's sting.

Holy COW was this a good book. Lehane has such a realistic way of telling a story that keeps you riveted. Excellent book.
