I really loved the first book and definitely enjoyed the second one! This sequel takes place about a month after the first one. After they arrived back home from their trip, Hallie, Kase and the Yalven emissary Saldr met with the High Council about the mission. Hallie has not seen Kase since then. This book starts with them going to a Burning for Zeke Kase’s brother. Hallie suddenly gets a telegram from her family telling her to come and that it’s urgent and she asks Kase to take her who at first declined but then mysteriously decides to take her to her family for reasons that Hallie does not understand, but is grateful nonetheless. And well, the trip does not go quite as planned.
This has a very slow start, I will say, but bear with it! It’s totally worth it by the end! There’s so much that happens in this book! I mean after the very exciting first book, the first half of the sequel is mainly focusing on Hallie and Kase and the way they are dealing with the aftermath of the previous mission. Then the second half is basically quite the adventure like the first one and the terribly agonizing and frustrating romance that you’re wondering whether they will ever kiss was just so wonderfully played out! There is a scene at the very end that just made my heart flutter! And the secrets that come out and admissions that happen the two of them was a long time coming and we finally get to hear the whole truth about both of them.
Despite how frustrating and annoying the characters can be, I loved this book! I love the world, such a unique steampunk Victorian England style world, with a slow burn romance that makes you want to rip your hair out and such an exciting dangerous adventure! There is a reference in here too that reminded me of Flynn Rider. Not sure if it was on purpose and if it was, I got it! Because well he’s the best!
Thank you to the author for the free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
