This delightful sequel was even better than the first. I loved the additional points of view from characters we didn’t hear from in the first novel (though the main narrators are still Kase and Hallie).
Like the first book, the story is highly focused on character development rather than actual plot line. Obviously things are happening as the story progresses but I see these stories having the characters develop more in between the big events rather than during them if that makes sense.
I absolutely ADORE Kase and Hallie. I love their banter but then I also really love their inner monologues and their tender moments that they show other people (especially to one another but just to be clear “they are just friends”). They both have trauma not only from events that happened 3 years prior but also from the mission they went on and have just come back from. They take turns caring for the other during their trauma responses; which include but aren’t necessarily limited to panic attacks, memory paralysis (too caught up in memories/flashbacks where they are rendered immobile in real life), and separation anxiety.
The amount of absolute chaos and DRAMA in this book is intense. I was absolutely not prepared but I think the author does a great job of alternating narrators as well as diffusing tension between chapters/scenes to allow us to breathe.
I want to give this book 5 stars because I love the characters immensely (well, some of them) but one thing that bothers me is how it feels like we spend the first 70% of the book setting all these things up for the last 30% and then all of these revelations and information gets thrown at us and my brain is like *time out* I know that is a very typical story structure where most of the story is building up to the climax and then the bit after the climax/major revelation is the resolution or the come down/setting up for the next book. I feel like this book doesn’t quite feel like a sci-fi/fantasy until the last bit and that’s when we start getting into the ancient magic, prophecies, revelations, and such. I think it happens this way because of how character focused these novels are but there’s gotta be some things that come to light…and as the tagline for the book says “the end of time is coming”.
I’m thinking that we are going to get a lot more details regarding the Yalvs and this wild prophecy in the third book. The fact that the series is called the Gate Chronicles leads me to believe that this is going to go beyond a trilogy. There’s so much that can happen and with it being as character driven as it is, I can see it being at least 6 books (though the author has not released anything and this is solely my theory).
You will definitely enjoy this book if you enjoyed the first one but you have to read the first book before this one. This book includes:
✨ slow burn romance
✨ witty banter
✨ grumpy/sunshine dynamic
✨ PTSD/trauma response/coping mechanisms representation from multiple characters
✨ reluctant heroes
✨ ancient prophecy
