It made me a bit anxious - holding my breath. It was hard to understand what was happening and it felt like something bad was always on the next page. Well written; but not for me, right now anyways.

I am honestly not sure what to say about this book. It made me uncomfortable. It distressed me. At many points I felt viscerally disgusted. I didn't like any of the characters. So why 4 stars you ask? Because I think that was this point. This book shows you the sort of generational poverty rife in America's heartlands in a brutal, unflinching, unashamed manner. The author shows you the reality of these people's lives and dares you to be disgusted by them - and it makes you look at your own perceptions and ask yourself why you feel that way.

I only finished this book because I thought there might possibly be a happy ending. I don't want to spoil it for you so I won't tell...but you can see the stars I gave it.

Easy to see why this book
was in the Not My Cuppa Tea
Bookbox. Very hard to read
this bleak look at the Bean
family of Egypt, Maine.
Nevertheless, the book has
an authentic feel, capturing
the awful hopelessness of life
for some.

Not bad, but dragged a bit at times.
