this book is bonkers and probably bad but I’ve also read it three times, so do what you will with that
3.5 stars
Updated review post-reread Dec 2022:
I just wanted to list all the similarities between this book and Criminal Minds because I think it's hilarious:
-August has an "eidetic memory" and multiple PHDs just like our friend Spencer Reid, also is a super-genius and graduated all school hella early (i'm pretty sure they even studied similar subjects)
-Just like Spencer, August's mom had schizophrenia
-The love interest worked in the behavioral analysis unit of the FBI
-Calliope is a master hacker on-call 24/7 for info-gathering (Penelope Garcia????)
first read:
I truly have no idea how this author always manages to write a book that has a lot of elements I normally don't like but somehow makes me enjoy myself???
This book is ridiculous and insta-love and occasionally almost silly and corny but I still had a great time. August is probably my favorite Mulvaney.
I DO think it's a tiny bit weird that in these books the characters are always gettin down n dirty immediately after something traumatic happens, but you do you I guess. Just...be prepared to suspend ur disbelief if you're gonna read this?? I don't even know. I don't even know how to explain these books.

Never thought that I'd get as invested into a series as i am into this one I honestly loved August and Lucas and they definitely surpassed Noah and Adam i can't wait to read the rest of the series I'm particularly excited for the twins books
Review after reading the whole series:
#1 Headcase (Asa & Zane)
#2 Lunatic (Archer & Mac)
#3 Moonstruck (Jericho & Atticus)
#4 Unhinged (Adam & Noah)
#5 Maniac (Aidan & Thomas)
#6 Psycho (August & Lucas) <-- HERE
#7 Madman (Avi & Felix)
How disappointing, especially when this book seems to have a pretty high rating. August is a genius in physics, but you don't see him put his ability to good use in this book. Lucas is an FBI profiler/ psychic; you only see his psychic power, not his ability to profile. This is putting great character profiles to waste. It would be better if August could use his knowledge and ability to crack the case. She should also showcase more of Lucas's use of psychic powers to profile the criminals.
As for the case, it's a pretty simple case of murdering and trafficking women. The author gets into a formula of guy meets guy, instant love, lots of smut, some discussions about the case, a computer genius comes in to save the day, an antihero introduces fiancé to the family, punishes the evil bastards, and happily ever after.
It's a pity as character setting-wise; I like August and Lucas, but the way they were portrayed in this story didn't work for me. Also, I don't think Lucas needs to be a psychic. It would be so much better if he were just a brilliant profiler who stood in the way because his whole department was corrupt, and he was forced to teach at the college. Then, along with August and his family, they exposed the truth and got the bad guys punished the Mulvaney way.
