While I can hardly be objective about a book that was so formative to my elementary-school-aged self, this wonderfully constructed young adult novel is still a delight to adult eyes. Tamora Pierce does a great job introducing new characters and adventures into her existing world, while enriching what came before.

This was a quick, easy read, but there's really nothing special or outstanding about it. I think it kind of sets up the character of Daine, but it seemed like it moved from one thing to another, introducing new ideas a little too quickly. I didn't like it quite as well as the Alanna series.

Daine is a likable enough character, and there are some returning characters from the Alanna series. There are also a few new ones as well, but no one that grabbed me, and although I liked the end of this story, for most of the book I wasn't completely pulled in. I found my mind wandering quite a bit.

Still, I would definitely recommend Tamora Pierce's books to fantasy lovers, most especially younger ones who want to read fantasy but don't have the patience or desire to read the longer, more involved fantasy.

I did not care for the full cast reading of this book - it really had an impact on how much I did not like it. I wonder if I would like Tamora Pierce better if I just read the story -instead of listening to the constructed drama.

More confident and less problematic than author Tamora Pierce's earlier work Song of the Lioness, but with its same fun sense of magic and adventure. The Lioness Alanna and her friends return as supporting characters this time, with the main focus given over to new character Daine and her own distinct magical powers. This first book in the Immortals quartet tells a satisfying story in its own right, but it also sets up a larger plot and character arc for Daine that should follow through to the other books nicely.
