I hate this book It’s gross, vulgar, and crude at times. Not so much scary- more a sinister thriller. I do want to learn more about Rabies now. The book is engaging enough however but the ending is the worst.

"The monster never dies."
Read on my Kindle. For a lot of this book, I thought it was just fine. We get a ton of background info on all of the characters. I thought for this reason it was pretty slow, until the ending, at which point I felt like I was there. I was part of their lives. I'll be honest - this one made me cry at the end. It was totally unexpected and hit like a gut punch. Certainly classic King - not my favorite but certainly one I won't soon forget.

Song: Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace
One of King's absolute worst. For a writer known for creating memorable characters, there's not one here who even approaches three-dimensionality. The only character I actually liked was the dog, and his story is a tragic one and he ultimately devolves into just a vehicle for jump scares.

This book was about as exciting as watching paint dry. King has written several other books where characters are stuck in a small confined space for the majority of the book, but those at least had interesting characters and a plot that made sense.
There are no characters in this book that I looked forward to hearing more from their POV. The main family had some interesting developments early on that fell flat and then fell apart when the father went on a business trip. The secondary family also had some interesting dynamics early on, which then fell completely apart when two of them went to a different state, seemingly just to have a boring POV away from the action. And the crying four year old drove me insane. I nearly DNFed because of him.
The plot was WEAK. Early on, there were a few developments that were interesting, but he resolved them really early on and then separated everyone, leaving very little room for those developments to come back into the plot in an interesting way. Easily my least favorite part of this book is the plot conveniences surrounding the main conflict of the story. I won't go into specifics because it doesn't happen until halfway through the book, but basically, several characters make really stupid decisions for literally no reason.
This is easily the worst Stephen King book I have read so far.
Special shout out to the abysmal narration of the audiobook. Her depiction of Tad probably fed into my hatred of his character. If I was counting narration in my rating of this book, it would get 1☆ instead of 2☆.
