Princess General Lana Fullfeather of Lyonesse is still grappling with the fact that she won the Successional and has become the second in line for the throne AND that her father is Fae. There is much to learn in her new role and the sibling rivalry with at least one of her half-siblings did not end merely because the Successional is over.

Weekly private meetings with her father go a long way toward helping Lana feel more connected to her father. But she knows that she has work to do. First and foremost, there is the need for a diplomatic mission to neighboring kingdoms. King Oberon wants to regain control of his kingdoms bonegate so he can heal his land and see his people thrive. But it will take more military might than he can muster alone. Princess Lana's first attempt at diplomacy does not go well at all, although she does manage to recruit the support of one of the most formidable giant clans.

But it's the final task of this venture that has Lana most concerned. As she is familiarizing herself with maps of Buyan and the layout of Queen Pari's castle, Lana wonders how her father and the queen came to hate each other so. In the past, the two royal families got along very well. Oberon and Pari were even promised to each other at one time. And then it all went wrong. The information that Lana pieces together is incomplete and might only be rumor after all. But knowing the truth wouldn't change anything. Oberon wants Pari dead.

Can she find it in herself to kill Queen Pari of Buyan when the time comes? For that is her task. Assassin. It will be her responsibility to get her half-siblings into Buyan without being detected, kill the enemy Queen, and make sure everyone gets away. Can they get in and out of the kingdom undetected? Will Lana be able to use her powers effectively to get her siblings in and out of enemy territory safely? And why did King Oberon and Queen Pari become such mortal enemies to begin with? These questions - and her undeniable attraction for her guard, Garrett, threaten to distract Lana from a mission that the entire Kingdom of Lyonesse is depending on. Failure isn't an option.

Assasin witch picks up right where Hawk Witch left off and it follows Lana as she learns to be a Princess general while also dealing with a variety of challenges that come with it.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot and I found it to be a faster read than the first book. I liked that we finally got to see more of the Fae Realm and other nearby realms. I also liked the character development while Lana did win the succession things didn’t magically become easy for her and she still has plenty of things to learn. I also liked the development of her relationship with Garrett. I’m fairly wary of romance in young adult books as it usually tends to be toxic or just another love triangle but they both handled things maturely and I’m looking forward to seeing how things develop.

The book also has a lot of foreshadowing elements (potentially) that imply that there might be something else going on in the kingdom that none of the heirs are aware of so I’m looking forward to seeing how that potentially develops in the next book. Overall 5/5 stars.

I was provided a copy of the book from the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received a review copy of this book. Fortunately, I very much enjoyed it so that won't impact my review.

This is shaping up to be a really terrific series! I absolutely love the world building Ashley McLeo has done here. The Fae world that the "old world" i.e. our world, kids have come from and are now trying to understand and navigate makes for very intriguing situations and challenges for the characters, and super engaging reading for the reader!

I love that all the female characters - even the not-so-nice ones - are strong, capable, intelligent and kick-ass. They are none of them perfect, but all of them handle things themselves, there are no white knights rescuing them, and I love that! Especially as these are younger people, this series offers absolutely EXCELLENT role models of how women can do things for younger women readers. We need more of this for sure!

The action, suspense and twists and turns in the story make for a very exciting and fast-paced read and there are a few surprises along the way, as well as what seems to be some foreshadowing of perhaps some surprises to come in the next book.

I am hoping that Lana will get past her insecurities about her position and role in the next book. I love her as a character and I really rooted for her to believe in herself more than she was *quite* able to manage this time around. We all grow over time, and I hope Lana will too.

Overall, I find this series - and Ashley McLeo's other books - to be well-written, engaging paranormal stories with very likable interesting characters and exciting story-lines.

ALL IS NOT AS IT SEEMS.
Maybe Lana didn't do herself any favors earning her 'General' title. Now she has an uphill battle against more skilled, more educated and more experienced siblings while trying to prove her worth to the title and her father. Packed full of non stop action and adventures. Recommended series by a clever writer.
