A novella told alternately in rhyming verse and second person prose vignettes, narrated by a woman who breaks off a long term hetero relationship to be with a slightly flighty unconventional woman.

Lots of longing and lust, self recrimination and shame, some sorrow, some joy and self forgiveness… I think I’ve read too many pseudo-poetic navel gazing hip literary elder millennial ennui type books recently to fully appreciate this one. It certainly has all the right intersexual references to be a hit for bookstagram: Rachel Cusk, Adrienne Rich, Jamaica Kincaid, Natalia Ginzburg, Louise Glück, the Nathalie Léger Dorothy Project books, and even Pinegrove (timely considering the tiktok Pinegrove shuffle trend).

It was fine

i am very new to poetry, and this was a christmas gift to ease me into the genre.

there were some moments when i thought the writing was beautiful and i marked them.
'then you climbed outside your skin and watched your body for a final time encircled by that space.'

there were other times when i thought the poems felt stiff and forced.
i think it would have worked better as a short story or novel, with a sprinkling of poems.

the author is fascinating and i would love to read something else written by her, but most of this collection wasn't for me.

I read it all at once. I applaud the author for being meticulous and writing a novel in rhyming couplets. Sometimes the rhymes were a stretch, but I get it. Any time I got bored of the couplets there was a chunky paragraph thrown in which I really appreciated. This book is heady, queer, and fast-paced.

I just found it too be too slow paced and didn't keep my attention enough to finish it

Cute:)

So vividly open to her thoughts and happenings with her intimate relationships. The writing felt well crafted. I want to write like her.

They were interesting and well written poems. I enjoyed reading them, but I didn't particularly love or connect to them. I feel pretty neutral about it. 3⭐️
