I hate putting up fewer than four star reviews, because authors deserve respect for the effort - but this story was - not my cup of tea.

I am not saying that it is a bad story - only that it was not a good story - for me!

So - three stars. Anything less would be insulting, and we cannot have that.

I think I just didn’t get it. Had high hopes for it though

A quick and enjoyable read littered with some very powerful lines that hit hit me right in the heart. Brilliant stuff.

Well written and poignant, and I listened to it in one sitting.

“Sexuality is, after all, a formal concern. Finding for one’s time on earth a shape that feels more native than imposed, a shape in which desire, having chosen it, can multiply.”

God I really, really wanted to like this, especially as I’ve heard so many people rave about it, but I just didn’t enjoy.

Some of this I really enjoyed - there are phrases and sentiments that made me pause and reread. But I really didn’t like the format so much. It could have been part of the point the author was making, a device to explore how uncomfortable it can be it exist outside the societal ‘norms’ of desire - how scary and disorganised it feels to wade into something that looks so much like a rhyming couplet that you’ve been told you want and is inherently the same but ultimately queered. I think that’s clever and beautiful, but it made for cryptic reading and kind of annoying half rhymes. Overall a good read and exploration of sexuality, selfhood and love as a mirror, but the execution was grating at times.
