A reflection of bravery, betrayal, and human fault. A book of poems I’ll never forget, tossled truths and lies ringing with reflective confessions

A pleasant Valentine's Day read. Established heterosexual love in contest with newfound queer attraction (guess who wins out) for a few pages, and then Millner ruminates on the insecurity and fragility of her protagonist's new relationship. Millner does this while questioning how narrative and romance are both working in tandem and against one another at all times, and she makes explicit that this is a novel in verse that wishes to achieve some semblance of optimism. Love is love, and, to Millner's narrator, it is one of the most destabilizing and teaching forces by which she will ever be touched. I think Millner has too much of a tendency to reference without really making an attributed quote her own. It feels a tad shallow. Her tendency to not rhyme in a book billed as being filled with rhymed couplets also made me less than ecstatic. Rhyme, Maggie, rhyme! The rhymes are propulsive, at times humorous, and add a thematic texture to the text. The couplet form here literally connects the idea of two people in relation to one another. But it also can be a formal nod to the protagonist moving through life between a varying past and present. The protagonist finds her identity in collision. So make it even more enticing. Felt a tad noncommittal. Cute, buzzy read.

Love a bit of verse books, the book feels highly personal and the rhyming couplets do a wonderful job of bringing the story to life while leaving parts of the story up to the imagination.
