1000 estrellitas.

The writing in this book is not great and connection between the two main characters had some holes. Despite that, i tore through it.
It was a little rough going to start because it was just so very 1994, but SEP knew what she was doing. Phoebe is marvelous and probably deserved better than Dan. He was trying his best not to be a caveman, and nearly made it, despite the number of times I wanted her to leave him hanging. The "auditioning another woman to be the mother of my children" plot really could've been shelved. I liked her relationships with the players and how she helped humanize him to them, and the growth of the team's general manager, Ron, was satisfying. Trump jump scare! Sigh. So very 1994.

I really didn't warm to the hero Dan. He was an unlikeable ass, and treated the heroine Phoebe like dirt most of the time. That said, I loved the story.
Phoebe's terrible experiences as a child and adolescent so clearly shaped her identity as an adult. It was a tragedy to see her feeling the need to use her clothing and a sex-kitten persona as a shield to protect herself. Over the years she seemed to have lost herself in the process. The stipulations in her father's will forced Phoebe to confront her fears and she is such a strong heroine for being able to do so.
While dealing with some very heavy subject matter, there was just as much fun and cheeky banter to lighten the mood, so I didn't feel completely depressed as I read.
Eventually Dan redeemed himself, but it was a near thing for me. I'd definitely read other books about the Chicago Stars football team.
As an aside, I found it interesting how much emphasis was placed on fearing HIV/AIDS and homophobia in places throughout the book. I realised how much things have changed since this was written in the early 90's.
This book contains a sexual assault.
This book contains descriptive love scenes.

Four stars with the caveat that the 1994 of it all can be a lot and there’s way more detail of a past assault than I care to have in a romance book. Somehow, in spite of all the problematic parts that come with the early 90s, it’s still a good read.
