4.5 ⭐️ — this is my first experience with washington’s short story writing, as i’ve only read his two novels. i think his sparse and intimate, at times even claustrophobic, storytelling perfectly suits the short story form.

favorites: alief, shepherd, bayou, lot, south congress, waugh

Coming of age short story collection set in modern-ish Houston centered around a biracial young man discovering his sexuality. Some of the stories focus on his other neighbors, but most are about him and his family. It was all well written and moving; I'm glad I read it, but I'm not sure how much of an impact it left on me.

Lot is a collection of short stories set in Houston and told from multiple POV’s. Many of the stories focus on the same family, in particular a young man dealing with a turbulent home life, poverty, and coming to terms with his own sexuality.

The stories were gritty and sometimes quite bleak but the one thing that came across for me was how strong the community was. I felt a real sense of place even while the characters themselves were lost.

The book addressed some difficult topics such as racism, poverty, illegal immigration and homophobia. Washington took me on a journey that explored family and friendship, love and survival. An honest and emotional read.

Many thanks to the publisher for the gifted book in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I liked this collection of short stories while also wanting more from them. The stories didn't really connect with me and I don't really know why that was, other than the fact that short stories by their very nature have trouble connecting with me. I appreciated Bryan Washington for writing them and giving us this collection of stories centered on a black, Latinx queer person. And at the same time, I wanted to connect with the characters more. But they lacked enough development for me to get there with them.
